To understand the world of credit card fraud, you must first learn an entirely new language. Words like "skimming," "shoulder surfing" and "phishing" may sound less criminal than "stealing," but they are, in fact, ways in which money can be stolen off your credit card.
And though there are no definitive global figures on losses from credit card fraud - most financial institutions are tight-lipped on the subject - an FBI report from 2005 indicated that credit cards represented the majority of the total $315 billion U.S. financial fraud loss for that year, while a recent European study found that more than 22 million adults fell victim to credit card scams in 2006. One in 10 web pages scrutinised by search giant Google contained malicious code that could infect a user's PC. Researchers from the firm surveyed billions of sites, subjecting 4.5 million pages to "in-depth analysis". A further 700,000 pages were thought to contain code that could compromise a user's computer, the team report. The amount of spam clogging up email servers has exploded, according to the findings in a new survey. Security researchers are warning users to beware of a new spam campaign that is offering up an online prostitute finder. The spammed e-mails don't seem to carry any malware and the Web site that the messages link to don't have any embedded malicious code. About 75% of all mails on the Internet are spam. About 2% of spams are malware, says Patrik Runald, senior security specialist, F-Secure Security Labs. Now, spam has become an even bigger challenge due to increased volume of image spam. These emails circumvent traditional filters, which look only for text. Image spams also take up to 70% of the bandwidth because of the large file sizes.
